HBO is well known for building anticipation, but the final trailer for House of the Dragon season 3 may have gone a step further than intended by revealing a major storyline moment right away.
The outcome of the highly anticipated Battle of the Gullet—the large-scale naval conflict that opens the season—appears to be essentially confirmed. Rhaenyra Targaryen comes out on top, ultimately taking control of King’s Landing. For readers of George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, this aligns with the source material. However, for viewers unfamiliar with the books, it may feel like a significant spoiler that would have been more impactful on screen.
The trailer begins with a grim battlefield scattered with bodies, as Daemon Targaryen, played by Matt Smith, is shown fighting in brutal close combat while dragons devastate a naval fleet from above. The sequence quickly shifts to Rhaenyra Targaryen standing in a captured King’s Landing, declaring control over the city and an intent to secure it without further destruction.
Showrunner Ryan Condal has previously described the opening episode as one of the most ambitious and intense ever produced. The Battle of the Gullet itself pits Corlys Velaryon’s forces against Tyland Lannister’s fleet and the Triarchy, forming one of the deadliest naval battles in Westerosi history.
While Rhaenyra’s victory is clear, the trailer also emphasizes that winning the throne is only the beginning. Alicent Hightower delivers one of the trailer’s most pointed lines, warning that power comes with a heavy cost.
Inside King’s Landing, political instability is already growing. Factions aligned with the Greens are shown spreading propaganda and weakening support for Rhaenyra’s rule, while even her own council appears divided by distrust and internal conflict.
Meanwhile, Aemond Targaryen remains a looming threat on the battlefield, riding the dragon Vhagar and continuing to challenge Rhaenyra’s claim. At the same time, Rhaenyra herself believes eliminating Aegon II could secure stability, though resentment among the population suggests otherwise.

Alicent also appears to be making strategic moves of her own, including tense confrontations that highlight the growing emotional and political divide between the two sides.
Actor Emma D’Arcy has noted that Rhaenyra enters this season in a more decisive, active role after earlier struggles, but the trailer makes it clear that greater power comes with even heavier consequences.
If season 2 felt like a slow build-up, season 3 is shaping up to deliver immediate intensity. House of the Dragon returns on HBO and Max on June 21.
