Call of Duty players on last-generation consoles are facing major changes in the coming months. Activision has confirmed that the next main entry in the franchise, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, will not be released on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. Alongside this, support for Call of Duty: Warzone on those systems is also being phased out.
According to the rollout plan, the process will happen gradually over several stages and will fully conclude later this year. The first step begins on June 4, when Warzone will be removed from the PS4 and Xbox One digital stores, preventing any new downloads on those platforms.

Players who already own the game will still be able to access and play it for a limited time. Activision has stated that Warzone will remain playable on PS4 and Xbox One until the end of Season 06 of Call of Duty: Black Ops 7.
Another key change arrives on June 25, when the in-game Warzone store will be shut down for last-gen consoles. COD Points will still be usable until then, while Battle Pass progression and rewards will continue to function as normal through the remaining seasonal cycle.
The final stage of the transition is expected with the launch of Modern Warfare 4 Season 1, at which point Warzone will no longer be playable on PS4 or Xbox One.
For PlayStation users, this shift comes during Sony’s “Days of Play 2026” promotion, although significant discounts on PS5 consoles remain unlikely. Still, it may encourage some players to consider upgrading to newer hardware.

Activision also confirmed that player progression will carry over when switching to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, or PC, as long as the same Activision account is used. Purchased COD Points will also transfer, while unused points remain tied to the original console ecosystem.
Warzone helped extend the lifespan of last-generation consoles for years after newer hardware launched, but that era is now coming to an end. Players who want to continue playing Call of Duty’s battle royale will need to upgrade soon.
