Apple has officially set its “Surprise and shine” event for September 9. The spotlight is expected to fall on the iPhone 18 Pro lineup, while the company could also finally unveil its first foldable iPhone.

Apple is about to open one of the most important chapters in the iPhone’s history. The company has officially confirmed its next major event for Wednesday, September 9, using the tagline “Surprise and shine.” Apple itself has not revealed the products that will appear on stage, but the timing leaves little doubt that the new iPhone generation will be at the center of the presentation.

What makes this year’s event different is the scale of the expectations around it. Apple is widely expected to introduce the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, but reports also point to something much bigger: Apple’s first foldable iPhone, reportedly positioned as an iPhone Ultra.

If that happens, September 9 could become one of Apple’s most significant product launches in years.

The iPhone 18 Pro is expected to lead the show

The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are expected to be the main products of the event.

Rumored changes include Apple’s next-generation A20 Pro chip, improvements to the camera system, a smaller Dynamic Island and a new dark-red or “Dark Cherry” finish. The Pro Max is also expected to receive some hardware differences of its own, including a larger battery and potentially a variable-aperture camera.

Apple has not confirmed those specifications, so they should be treated as reports rather than final specifications. The A20 Pro is nevertheless expected to be one of the biggest upgrades. Reports suggest Apple is focusing not only on raw processing performance but also on efficiency, which could become increasingly important as Apple pushes more AI processing directly onto the iPhone.

That matters because Apple’s software strategy is changing.

At WWDC26, the company introduced the next generation of Apple Intelligence and Siri AI, describing it as a significantly more capable version of Siri built around a new architecture.

The September hardware launch therefore arrives at an interesting moment: Apple has already shown where its AI software is going, and now the new iPhone hardware is expected to provide the engine underneath it.

Then there is the foldable iPhone

The biggest potential surprise is not another camera upgrade.

It is the foldable iPhone.

Multiple reports claim Apple is preparing a premium foldable device that could be marketed as an iPhone Ultra. The reported design is very different from the Galaxy Z Fold approach currently used by Samsung.

Rumors point to a large internal display of around 7.7 inches and an external display around 5.3 inches. The device is also expected to use two rear cameras and could replace Face ID with Touch ID integrated into the power button.

Apple has not confirmed any of this.

But the fact that the foldable has repeatedly appeared in reports from multiple sources has made it one of the most anticipated Apple products in years.

The timing would also make sense.

Samsung has spent years developing the foldable category, while Google and other Android manufacturers have pushed increasingly sophisticated folding phones into the premium market. Apple has remained outside the category.

That could finally change.

Apple may be changing the iPhone launch strategy

There is another important detail surrounding this year’s event.

The entire iPhone 18 family may not arrive at the same time.

Current reports suggest Apple could introduce the Pro models and the foldable device in September, while the standard iPhone 18 and lower-cost models may follow later.

That would represent a significant departure from Apple’s traditional strategy of presenting a complete iPhone generation together.

The reason may be manufacturing.

A foldable iPhone would require a completely different supply chain from Apple’s conventional models, and early production volumes are expected to be much smaller. Some reports have suggested that the first-generation foldable could be extremely limited at launch.

That could also explain why Apple would separate the product launches.

Instead of trying to manufacture millions of foldable devices immediately, Apple could introduce the technology as an ultra-premium product and gradually expand production.

It would be a familiar Apple strategy: start expensive, refine the hardware, then bring parts of the technology into a much broader product range.

The event also marks a new era for Apple

September 9 will be significant for another reason.

It will be John Ternus’s first major Apple product event as CEO.

Apple announced earlier this year that Tim Cook would move into the role of executive chairman while Ternus takes over as CEO. Ternus previously led Apple’s hardware organization, making his first major keynote particularly important for investors and Apple fans.

That does not necessarily mean Apple is about to radically change its product strategy.

In fact, the products unveiled next week have been in development for years.

But the symbolism is difficult to ignore.

The first iPhone launch under a new CEO will also arrive as Apple faces increasing pressure to demonstrate that it can keep pace with competitors in artificial intelligence.

The company has made significant progress with Apple Intelligence and Siri AI, but the industry has moved quickly, and rivals have been releasing increasingly autonomous AI assistants and agentic systems.

The new iPhone will therefore be judged on more than cameras, battery life and processor speed.

People will want to know how much of Apple’s AI vision actually works on the device.

September 9 could be Apple’s biggest test yet

Apple has deliberately kept the details of the event secret.

Officially, all we know is the date, the “Surprise and shine” theme and the fact that the event will take place on September 9.

Everything beyond that remains speculation until Apple walks onto the stage.

But the potential lineup is enough to make this one of the company’s most important September events in years.

A faster iPhone 18 Pro would be expected.

A new camera system would be expected.

A better AI experience would be expected.

A foldable iPhone would change the conversation completely.

If Apple actually unveils an iPhone Ultra that folds, September 9 will not simply mark the arrival of another annual iPhone upgrade. It could mark the moment Apple finally enters the smartphone category that its biggest competitors have been building for years.

And this time, everyone will be watching what the new CEO does with the spotlight.
