Sony has introduced a new display technology called True RGB, which aims to significantly improve image quality in premium TVs and create an alternative between OLED and Mini LED.

This new Sony technology focuses on improving colors, brightness and real-world performance in everyday viewing environments, not just in ideal laboratory conditions.

What is Sony True RGB?

True RGB is a new TV backlight technology that uses separate red, green and blue (RGB) LEDs to create colors directly at the light source.

Unlike Mini LED or QLED, which use a base light and color filters, True RGB creates colors more accurately from the beginning of the image display process.

Sony aims for real-world use of TV at home

According to Sony, most users do not watch TV in dark rooms. The company estimates that:

87% of people watch TV in normal lighting environments
only a small percentage watch in ideal conditions (like a studio or cinema)

For this reason, True RGB is designed for real-world performance in everyday environments.

True RGB vs OLED vs Mini LED

OLED
Very high contrast
Accurate colors in the dark
Lower brightness in bright rooms
Mini LED
Very high brightness
Can lose color accuracy
Sony True RGB
Combines high brightness + accurate colors
Improves performance in any lighting environment
Aims to reduce the tradeoffs between OLED and Mini LED
Key benefits of Sony True RGB
More accurate and richer colors

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Sony says True RGB offers:

up to 2x more colors than Mini LED
up to 4x more colors than OLED

Better viewing angles

Colors and contrast remain more consistent even when viewed from the sides.

Reduced color banding

Scenes like skies, sunsets, and gradients appear smoother and more natural.

High brightness without loss of quality

Colors don’t wash out when the screen brightness increases.

First Sony models with True RGB

Sony will initially bring the technology to its premium TVs:

Sony BRAVIA 9 II (flagship model, 65” – 115”)
Sony BRAVIA 7 II (50” – 98”)
OLED line-up continues with BRAVIA 8 II
Additional technology: Advanced anti-reflection

Sony also introduced Immersive Black Screen Pro, an anti-reflection coating that:

reduces reflections in bright rooms
preserves the screen’s deep blacks
Is True RGB the future of TVs?

Sony positions True RGB as a significant new step in display technology, aiming for:

less compromise between OLED and Mini LED
better quality in real-world usage conditions
