Minecraft creator Markus Persson has hinted at the development of a new game that could be seen as the spiritual successor to the popular title.
Persson, also known as Notch, has sparked intense interest in the gaming community with his recent statement regarding the development of a new game that could be considered the spiritual successor to Minecraft. At the beginning of the new year, Persson ran a poll on X asking fans to choose between two possible projects: a Minecraft-like game or a roguelike game with a retro aesthetic.
The poll garnered almost 250,000 votes, with the majority favoring a “Minecraft 2”. However, the situation is more complicated than it seems. Persson sold the Minecraft rights and his company to Microsoft in 2014 for $2.5 billion. dollars, which means he can’t use the name “Minecraft 2” for his new venture. In addition, according to him, there was a contractual obligation that prohibited him from creating games with terrain modification for one year after the sale.
The creator clarified that he plans to develop the new game “in a way that doesn’t try to sneakily infringe on the great work that the Mojang team is doing.” Minecraft continues to receive regular updates and new content, remaining one of the most popular games worldwide. It’s worth noting that the project is still in its very early stages, with Persson warning that there’s a chance the game may never make it to release.
Nevertheless, it is recalled that the original Minecraft was released in an alpha version within a year of Mojang’s founding. The market for Minecraft-style games has grown significantly in recent years, with titles such as Palworld, Terraria, and Ark: Survival Evolved offering similar gameplay elements with significant variations in style.
The prospect of a new game from the creator of Minecraft is expected to attract considerable interest in the gaming community.
