It’s been a few weeks since the OnePlus 13 was officially introduced back in China. It, however, seems that the smartphone maker isn’t quite done yet. An upcoming OnePlus smartphone with the model number CPH2645 and “pineapple” as the motherboard identifier recently visited a benchmarking platform. MySmartPrice was the first to spot the Geekbench visit, and later, Digital Trends came across a total of five benchmark runs carrying the same device signature, all listed on the same date. The benchmark logs, assuming they are accurate, confirm some juicy information about OnePlus’ next budget phone. Now, this isn’t the first time…

As more publishers cut content licensing deals with ChatGPT-maker OpenAI, a study put out this week by the Tow Center for Digital Journalism—looking at how the AI chatbot produces citations (i.e., sources) for publishers’ content—makes for interesting, or, well, concerning, reading. In a nutshell, the findings suggest publishers remain at the mercy of the generative AI tool’s tendency to invent or otherwise misrepresent information, regardless of whether or not they’re allowing OpenAI to crawl their content. The research, conducted at Columbia Journalism School, examined citations produced by ChatGPT after it was asked to identify the source of sample quotations plucked…
A group of Canadian news and media companies filed a lawsuit Friday against OpenAI, alleging that the ChatGPT maker has infringed their copyrights and unjustly enriched itself at their expense. The companies behind the lawsuit include the Toronto Star, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, the Globe and Mail, and others who seek to win monetary damages and ban OpenAI from making further use of their work. The news companies said that OpenAI has used content scraped from their websites to train the large language models that power ChatGPT—content that is “the product of immense time, effort, and cost on behalf of…
President-elect Donald Trump made no secret during his campaigning that he doesn’t think the U.S. should take an aggressive stance on climate change. From leading chants of “drill, baby, drill” to frequently criticizing everything from wind turbines to electric vehicles, he appears poised to cast a shadow over the climate tech sector for the next four years. Or will he? Like many of Trump’s positions, it’s hard to pinpoint his exact stance on climate change and technologies that serve to mitigate or adapt to it. What’s more, some of his proposed policies might stand to benefit climate tech broadly, even…
As one of the most decorated track cyclists of all time, Sir Chris Hoy might not seem an obvious candidate to back the burgeoning electric bike movement. The common refrain, after all, is that e-bikes aren’t real bikes. However, the six-time Olympic gold medalist has done exactly that, investing in a fledgling U.K. startup that has built a click-on contraption that makes it easier to convert a pushbike to electric and back again with minimal fuss. Skarper, as the company is called, has raised £12.8 million ($16.3 million) since its inception in 2020, with Hoy contributing to an early seed…
Meta’s investments into artificial intelligence stand to boost that usage even further. So to make sure it will have reliable infrastructure to support that business, Meta is taking the pipes into its own hands. TechCrunch has confirmed with sources close to the company that Meta plans to build a new, major fiber-optic subsea cable extending around the world—a 40,000+ kilometer project that could total more than $10 billion of investment. Critically, Meta will be the sole owner and user of this subsea cable—a first for the company and thus representing a milestone for its infrastructure efforts. Sunil Tagare, a subsea…
X is filled with accounts that mimic real-life public figures, ranging from politicians to sports professionals and artists. While some accounts mention “Parody” in their display names, others mention it in their bios, leading some people to mistake them for real accounts—including news anchors. According to a few app reverse engineers, the platform is developing a new label for parody or fan commentary accounts so they can more clearly identify themselves as parody accounts. If the company rolls out the label, and parody accounts adopt them, users will see a “Parody account” label below the username on the profile page…
As large enterprises grapple with how to incorporate AI into their platforms and processes, they have encountered a problem: Generative AI needs to have memory, and its training data must be constantly updated for it to have any practical use. This area is now called ‘Live AI,’ and a number of startups are working in the space, including Cohere and Writer. Another, Pathway, has just raised a $10 million seed round to build live AI systems that, claims the company, think and learn in real-time as humans do. The round was led by TQ Ventures, with participation from Kadmos, Innovo,…
By creating engaging and interactive games that incorporate sign language, ASL Aspire aims to make learning science, technology, engineering, and mathematics both fun and accessible. This innovative approach not only enhances understanding but also fosters a sense of community among young learners. Poor literacy skills have plagued the deaf and hard of hearing community for decades. The median literacy rates of deaf high school graduates have languished at a fourth-grade level since the turn of the 20th century, according to the National Center for Special Education Research. Bringing STEM concepts into the mix—the vocabulary for which is limited in standard…
