Artificial intelligence has spent the past few years being presented as one of the greatest productivity breakthroughs in modern history.

Now one of the technology industry’s most influential figures is warning that the same technology could create a level of economic disruption that society is not prepared to handle.

Bill Gates has issued one of his strongest warnings yet about artificial intelligence, arguing that AI could replace large numbers of jobs within the next decade and that governments need to start preparing before the disruption becomes unavoidable.

In a new essay published on Gates Notes, the Microsoft co-founder argues that the transition into the AI era could become one of the most turbulent periods in human history.

His concern is not that AI will simply eliminate a few occupations.

It is that AI could simultaneously transform software, customer service, law, medicine, manufacturing and other industries while increasingly capable robots begin affecting physical work as well.

And Gates believes the traditional approach of simply retraining displaced workers may not be enough.

Gates Says This Technological Revolution Is Different

Previous technological revolutions changed the labor market, but they generally unfolded over generations.

Agricultural workers moved into manufacturing.

Manufacturing eventually became more automated, while new office and service-sector jobs emerged.

The transition was painful, but there was time for economies and workers to adapt.

Gates believes AI could be different.

Modern AI can increasingly perform tasks involving language, reasoning, analysis, programming and decision-making.

That means the technology is not limited to replacing physical labor.

It can also perform work that traditionally required human cognitive abilities.

The problem is that these jobs also serve another purpose.

They are how people gain experience.

If AI eliminates too many of those early positions, workers could have difficulty getting the experience required to progress.

That could create a strange labor market in which companies want experienced workers but provide fewer opportunities for people to become experienced.

AI Could Eventually Reach Physical Jobs

Gates believes that is only part of the story.

He also expects robotics to become increasingly capable of performing physical tasks.

Humanoid and other advanced robots are improving rapidly in areas such as perception, movement and manipulation.

Gates specifically points to industries such as construction and hospitality as areas that could eventually experience significant robotic competition.

The combination of AI software and robotics hardware could be particularly powerful.

AI provides the ability to understand an environment and make decisions.

Robotics provides the physical capability to act.

The “Human Reserved” Idea

AI Could Still Be Used Inside Human-Reserved Professions

Gates is not arguing that healthcare or education should become AI-free.

He suggests that many professions could remain human-led while using AI to increase productivity.

A doctor could use AI to analyze medical information.

A teacher could use AI to prepare personalized learning materials.

A therapist could potentially use AI tools to assist with administrative tasks.

The human would remain responsible for the relationship and the most important decisions.

AI does not completely replace humans.
